The Challenge

Wellcome Collection (WC) is a cultural heritage institution within Wellcome- an independent global charitable foundation supporting research into health. ​

Having finalised their new 10-year strategy, WC were seeking support to drive the organisational transformation required to deliver on their priorities.​

Q5 partnered with WC to develop their top-level organisational structure, and then design their entire organisation to drive change through their roles, structures and ways of working. ​

Our Approach

Throughout this work we collaborated with senior stakeholders including the Executive Leadership Team and Wellcome Collection Director, alongside working groups from the organisation to:​

  • Facilitate workshops to define the vision for the new departments in line with the new strategy​
  • Evaluate their existing organisational structure and processes through as-is headcount analysis and focused deep dives across key cross-cutting processes​
  • Design Target Operating Models and structures to reflect their desired strategic shifts and the required capabilities to deliver their strategy​
  • Partner with the business leaders and People team to implement this organisational change, combining the OD implementation with communications and change support for the management team to empower them to own this change​
  • Provide People implementation support through collective and individual consultation, including advisory and delivery support for engagement and negotiation with the recognised trade union.​
  • Provide expert DE&I support and values-based coaching to ensure the engagement approach was aligned to Wellcome’s DE&I principles and to upskill leadership capability in managing complex change​
  • Identify and consolidate lessons learned to upskill the organisation for future organisational design transformations, integrating reflections from this process​

Key Outcomes

  • Fully implemented Enterprise-wide organisational design, roles and responsibilities, within the parameters of a flat headcount​
  • Recommended model for transforming their front of house resource model​
  • EDI embedded in engagement approach and comprehensive EDI impact assessment of all proposals​
  • Upskilled management team, enhancing management capability to engage and lead their teams through complex organisational change​
  • Comprehensive documentation for the design and implementation processes, including org structure, role taxonomies and job descriptions
  • Delivery support for implementation, including direct support to individual and collective consultation processes.​
  • Defined ways of working for critical processes underpinning the detailed design
  • Supported definition of business plans for activities across the organisation, including budgetary implications, ownership, interdependences and target outcomes​
  • Designed a new approach to measuring success, with updated metrics​ and principles for new governance structure and decision making across the organisation​
