The Challenge

CIPD are the professional body for HR & People Development with more than 160,000 members globally. They had recently identified a new strategy and organisation structure geared to driving rapid growth in key new markets (e.g. Asia Pacific). This was combined with significant investment in terms of both resources and technology.

They now needed to ensure that the organisational changes were fully aligned to the CIPD’s strategic priorities in order to deliver a fully customer-centric organisation that drives efficiency in activities and cost.

Our Approach

We conducted a full metro map review in three broad phases.

  • Phase 1 covered the highest-level design. We conducted a full as-is review of the organisation, including more than 30 interviews, and multiple focus groups. We then worked with the CEO to define the high-level structure of the organisation and the composition of his executive team
  • In phase 2 we worked with the new executive team to determine exactly how work should be divided up between the departments and how each department should be structured. To do this we went back around the metro map for each department and brought in numerous people from the organisation to provide input during a ‘design week’. This consisted of five consecutive day-long workshops, in a ‘lock-in’ environment.
  • In phase 3 we provided a more light-touch implementation support to each of the directorates, as well as a deep dive into one or two specific areas such as technology strategy.

Key Outcomes

  • With the CEO, we designed an operating model and high level structure of the entire organisation, and assisted in constructing the new executive team
  • We enabled individual departments to define their exact role within the organisation, and how they could best organise themselves to achieve that
  • We worked with the departments to identify what their key processes were, and redesigned them where necessary
  • We helped define a new technology strategy which aligned with the vision of the organisation
  • The wider leadership team in CIPD were engaged and aligned to the new strategy
  • Implemented ongoing work-streams and sprints to continue to drive transformation
